San Mateo SBDC
Specialty Auto Spa
“Working with the SBDC allowed my business to set up a new front that wasn’t just focused on auto detailing, but expanding into all the other services our clients actually needed, in terms of protecting their vehicle. It wasn’t just about washing, it was about preserving.”

About Business
Founded by owner Moustafa Said, Specialty Auto Spa officially launched its physical shop in September 2025. The business goes far beyond standard auto detailing by specializing in advanced paint protection. As an authorized installer for Ceramic Pro and Icon Rocklear in the San Mateo area, the shop focuses on high-end ceramic coatings and paint protection film.
Rather than offering simple, temporary washes, the business is dedicated to delivering long-term, high-quality paint and surface protection, ensuring the job is done right the first time. The ideal client is anyone who views their vehicle as an investment. This ranges from daily drivers looking for long-term durability to luxury and performance car owners wanting to shield their vehicles from rock chips, swirl marks, and UV damage.
After years in the fast-paced tech startup world, Moustafa wanted to build something more tangible and personal. His mobile detailing side business was already experiencing organic growth and was ready to transition into a permanent shop.
Inspiration also ran deep in his personal life. He grew up in an entrepreneurial family, watching his father run a private limo and charter service, and more recently watched his wife successfully build her own business. Realizing it was a “now or never” moment, Moustafa took the leap to turn his passion into a full-time career where the work never feels like a chore.
Challenge
The #1 hurdle was securing the right amount of capital to get the physical shop off the ground. Unlike mobile detailing with minimal overhead, opening a physical location required contractors, licensing, city and county registrations, and significant upfront investment. SBDC helped guide him toward the right direction, ultimately leading to a CDC loan.
Gameplan
The SBDC helped guide Moustafa through the complex funding landscape, ultimately pointing him in the right direction to secure a CDC loan that got the physical shop off the ground.
The most impactful piece of advice Moustafa received from his SBDC advisor was simple but transformative: truly listen to your clients, because they will tell you exactly what they need.
This advice completely reshaped his consultation process. Today, Moustafa asks targeted questions about how the client uses their car and what their budget looks like. By focusing on solving their specific problems, Specialty Auto Spa has built an incredibly strong engine of word-of-mouth referrals and repeat business.
Results
By establishing a physical presence, Specialty Auto Spa was able to land lucrative B2B contracts with local body shops and auto dealerships. Moving from one-off retail clients to recurring commercial relationships created a solid, stable foundation of revenue. Securing that first B2B contract triggered a domino effect, quickly bringing in additional regular business.
